ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
PLCI does not discriminate based on race, sex, religion, ethnic origin, or disability. It is required that prospective students have a high school diploma or equivalency diploma (GED) due to the intensity of the covered material. Students must turn in a copy of such diploma or GED upon enrollment. High school or college level transcripts may be accepted in lieu of the copy of diploma or GED.
Medical facilities require that a student be at least 18 years of age to work in direct patient care. Students, therefore, must be at least 17 years and 9 months before beginning the phlebotomy course. Students must also be 18 years of age by the completion of the course.
Students with English as a second language or those who did not graduate high school in the United States are required to pass an English equivalency test prior to acceptance in the course. The test is the WBST English basic skills test and students must pass with a level three in order to be accepted into the program.
Students must have the physical ability and emotional maturity to perform the duties of phlebotomy and the procedure of venipuncture. This may be discussed at the application interview. Students with a medical condition, which may affect their ability to draw blood or endanger other students exposed to their blood, must disclose this information to the Director or Administrator prior to the start of class. This includes but is not limited to: HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B or C, any other bloodborne disease; past or current injury to back, wrist, neck, any other handicap that makes it difficult to use hands or to be on feet for long periods of time. Students who have a medical condition that may affect them during class must disclose this information prior to the start of class, in case of an emergency.
Students who are pregnant must also disclose this to the Director or Administrator prior to admissions to PLCI. Pregnant women are excused from having venipuncture performed on them but must provide a volunteer (friend or family member) that is willing to have venipuncture performed on them in place of the student.
