Phlebotomy Course

"Phlebotomy" means to excise or cut into the vein of the human body.

We are open Tuesday and Thursday 9:00am - 4pm
Wednesday 9am - 1pm

PHLEBOTOMY PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The word “phlebotomy” comes from the Greek and Latin and means to excise or cut into the vein. Phlebotomists literally cut into veins to remove blood, however our instrument is very small and our cuts almost microscopic.

Many people have their blood drawn before surgery, during pregnancy or when they donate blood at a blood bank. However the history of phlebotomy comes from “bloodletting. Bloodletting was done for centuries to rid the human body of evil spirits and illnesses.

Today the ART of phlebotomy is taught to healthcare workers so that your next blood draw experience at the hospital, laboratory or doctor’s office is a safe and pleasant one and so that your blood is treated properly to insure the best and most accurate results are given to your physician.

In the state of Colorado you do not have to be state licensed to practice phlebotomy but most employers require a certificate from an accredited school which is what PLC of Denver offers you.

Phlebotomy Certification Program – Register Now

The certification program offered at Phlebotomy Learning Center of Denver is an intensive 10-week long course with an additional one-week clinical externship. For the classroom portion students attend class one time per week for 4 ½ hours. About ½ of the class time is devoted to lecture and about ½ of the time is devoted to lab work. The student must attend the entire ten week course (1 time per week for 4.5 hours); all 10 classes must be attended. Students will draw blood on each other under the careful and skilled supervision of a Certified Phlebotomist or Nurse Instructor. Students will also participate in a tour of a hospital laboratory on the second week of class.

Following successful completion of the classroom portion of the program students are placed on an externship for one week (5 days) 40 hours at a hospital or outpatient draw site. Students must complete the entire 40 hours and at least 100 blood draws to complete their requirements for certification. Students must complete the externship within 3 months of the last class attended. PLCI will work with the student to arrange the externship which best suits the student and the externship facility. PLC of Denver has up to 3 months to provide this externship to the student; however we try to schedule the externship as soon possible upon completion of the course work. PLCI will arrange one and only one externship for each student. Upon successful completion of the externship students are awarded a State Approved Phlebotomy Certification.

Phlebotomy Programs are offered on a continual basis. We have classes for Phlebotomy on Wednesday or Thursday evening from 5 – 9:30PM, Tuesday mornings from 8:30 AM - 1 PM, Friday mornings from 9 AM – 1:30PM and Saturdays from 9AM – 1:30PM or 2 – 6:30PM.

If emergencies occur after the first day of class, the student may transfer to another class at a later date. This is a lateral transfer with no make up classes without further cost. (See our complete transfer policy for further transfer information).

The cost of the class is $1595.00. This includes a fee of $65.00 for books and supplies. A deposit of $500.00 will be required to hold a space in a scheduled class. A $50.00 discount will be given if tuition is paid in full on or before the first day of class. The student will be covered under a blanket policy of PLCI for professional liability insurance at no extra charge. The coverage will be discontinued upon graduation.

Two written exams will be given. The first exam will be given at the beginning of the fifth class. The final exam will be given on the tenth week of class. There is also a final practical exam. The practical part of the final exam must be passed successfully from start to finish. After successful completion of the class, the student will be placed into an externship.

The student must pass the course with a score of 85% or above. The exam grades and the homework grades will be averaged together to calculate the final grade. The student must also have a satisfactory/passing performance report from their externship facility to receive a certificate.

Students not passing the course or the externship will not receive the State approved certificate. The student may retake the course at the price of $797.50 or ½ the current tuition price. If a student has to retake the course, a grade of 90% is needed to pass.

If extra help is needed to pass this course, a student can contact an instructor or the administrator and they will arrange a time to work with the student on an individual basis. The instructor is more than willing to give extra help to a student. PLCI will do everything possible to train a student, but the success or failure depends solely upon the student's effort and initiative.

PLCI does not guarantee job placement. If PLCI has any leads on phlebotomy jobs, this information will be passed on to the student. PLCI has no control over the available jobs. It is between the hiring institution and the student.

The student may come into PLCI to practice on the phlebotomy arm at any time the office is open, with appointment. Students may also bring volunteers to practice venipunctures on. The volunteer must sign a permission and waiver form. Equipment that is available for the student with which to practice is as follows: Alcohol preps, needles, needle holders, syringes, tourniquets, gauze, tape, slides and lancets.

Complete information on the Phlebotomy Certification Program is outlined in our Catalog.
